Since January 21, 2026, the TOEFL iBT reports section and overall scores on a 1–6 scale in half-point steps. Many universities and agencies still list their requirements as an old 0–120 number, though, so applicants often need to compare the two. This page reproduces the conversion chart ETS publishes, explains how to read it, and links to a calculator for your overall score.
| 1–6 score | CEFR level | 0–120 equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | C2 | 114 or higher |
| 5.5 | C1 | 107 or higher |
| 5 | C1 | 95 or higher |
| 4.5 | B2 | 86 or higher |
| 4 | B2 | 72 or higher |
| 3.5 | B1 | 58 or higher |
| 3 | B1 | 44 or higher |
| 2.5 | A2 | 34 or higher |
| 2 | A2 | 24 or higher |
| 1.5 | A1 | 12 or higher |
| 1 | A1 | 0 or higher |
The 0–120 column shows the lowest score in each band’s range. For example, a 4 starts at 72 and the next band up, 4.5, starts at 86, so a 4 covers roughly 72 to 85. CEFR levels follow ETS’s mapping: 6 is C2, 5–5.5 is C1, 4–4.5 is B2, 3–3.5 is B1, 2–2.5 is A2 and 1–1.5 is A1.
ETS also lists selected IELTS comparisons: an IELTS 9 aligns with a TOEFL 6, an IELTS 7 with a TOEFL 5 overall, and an IELTS 6 with a TOEFL 4 overall. For a broader look at the two tests, see TOEFL vs IELTS in 2026.
ETS states that the overall score is the average of the four section scores (Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking), rounded to the nearest half band. Its own examples: an average of 5.125 becomes a 5, and an average of 5.25 becomes a 5.5. You can try your own numbers with the TOEFL score calculator.
