Knowing the test-day routine removes a lot of avoidable stress. This guide summarizes what ETS says about check-in, ID, prohibited items and timing for the TOEFL iBT in 2026, then adds a few practice habits of our own. The rules below come from the ETS 2026–2027 information bulletin (European edition). Details such as deadlines and fees can differ by country, so confirm them in your ETS account before test day.
The redesigned TOEFL iBT runs about 90 minutes: Reading 30, Listening 29, Writing 23 and Speaking 8. ETS states there are no scheduled breaks, so plan to stay focused from start to finish. Reading and Listening are adaptive, which means the difficulty adjusts to your performance as you go. See our complete format guide for every task type.
The bulletin lists items such as phones, tablets, watches, headphones, calculators, books, notes, unauthorized scratch paper, rulers, highlighters, dictionaries and test prep materials. Use only the note-taking materials the test provides, and read the full list for your test format before you go.
According to the bulletin, regular online registration closes 7 days before the test date and express registration closes 2 days before it. To receive a 50% refund of the test fee you must cancel at least 4 full days before your test date. Because these rules and fees can differ by region, treat them as a starting point and check your own ETS page.
ETS's 2026-27 information bulletin states that there are no scheduled breaks in the TOEFL iBT test. For the Home Edition it also says unscheduled breaks are not allowed.
For a test center, the bulletin says to arrive at least 30 minutes before your assigned start time. For the Home Edition, you can begin check-in up to 15 minutes early and have up to 30 minutes after your scheduled time to begin.
The bulletin requires an original, valid, government-issued ID that shows your full name matching your registration, your date of birth, a recent photograph and your signature. Passports, driver's licenses and national ID cards are examples of accepted documents.
The bulletin says you must cancel at least 4 full days before your test date to receive a 50% refund of the test fee. Rescheduling rules and fees vary, so check your ETS account.
