TOEFL iBT 2026 Study Plan: 4, 8 and 12-Week Schedules

A good plan does three things: it starts with a baseline, spends most of its time on your weakest task types, and ends with timed practice. This page gives you three schedules (4, 8 and 12 weeks) built around the 2026 task types and the 1–6 scale. They are suggested frameworks, not guarantees. How much your score moves depends on where you start and how consistently you practice.

What ETS suggests

ETS publishes a 3-month study plan. In summary: month one is a baseline practice test plus foundation work across all four skills; month two is a weekly routine of four one-hour study sessions, one practice test and one review session; month three adds two to three timed practice tests a week, with the final seven days used for a few tests, reviewing weaknesses and no new material.

A weekly template you can reuse

DayFocus
Mon–Thu20–30 minutes on one task type (rotate your weakest), then review each mistake and note why
FriOne full timed section
SatWriting and Speaking tasks with feedback, or a full mock test
SunRest, or a light review of your mistake notes

Task types to rotate: Complete the Words, Read in Daily Life and Academic Passage in Reading; Choose a Response, Conversation, Announcement and Academic Talk in Listening; Build a Sentence, Write an Email and Academic Discussion in Writing; Listen and Repeat and Take an Interview in Speaking.

4-week plan (short on time)

  1. Week 1: baseline mock test under real timing. Write down your four section scores and pick the two weakest task types.
  2. Week 2: daily drills on those two task types, plus mistake review.
  3. Week 3: add timed sections and feedback on Writing and Speaking.
  4. Week 4: two full mock tests early in the week, light review after, and rest before the test.

8-week plan (balanced)

Week 1 baseline; weeks 2–5 targeted drills and mistake review; weeks 6–7 full timed mocks with Writing and Speaking feedback; week 8 light review and rest. We explain each step in How to raise your TOEFL 2026 score.

12-week plan (most room to improve)

  1. Weeks 1–4, foundation: baseline test, then work on all four skills, with extra time on vocabulary and grammar if those are your gaps. Read and listen to English every day.
  2. Weeks 5–8, routine: follow the weekly template above, with one full practice test a week.
  3. Weeks 9–12, simulation: two to three timed tests a week in a quiet place, focused on timing and your remaining weak spots. Keep the last week light.

Frequently asked questions

How long should I study for the TOEFL iBT?

It depends on where you start and your target score. A baseline mock test shows the gap. ETS publishes a 3-month plan, and many learners use anywhere from 4 to 12 weeks, but no schedule guarantees a result.

How many practice tests should I take?

ETS's 3-month plan includes one practice test a week in month two and 2-3 timed tests a week in month three. For shorter plans, one baseline and two to three timed mock tests near the end is a reasonable minimum.

What should I do in the last week?

ETS's plan suggests taking a couple of practice tests, reviewing weaknesses and avoiding new material in the final seven days. Rest the day before the test.
