TOEFL® Writing Section: A Quick Guide to All Three Tasks

The Writing section is made up of three different tasks, each testing a different skill — sentence-level grammar, functional email writing, and short opinion writing. They're graded differently, but a few habits raise your score across all three.

The three tasks at a glance

TaskWhat it tests
Build a SentenceGrammatical accuracy and sentence construction — building a correct sentence from given pieces.
Write an EmailFunctional writing — replying to a real-world email while addressing every point you were asked about.
Academic DiscussionShort opinion writing — contributing your own view to an academic discussion, with reasoning.

Habits that help on all three

Clear, correct, well-organized writing with simpler vocabulary consistently scores higher than writing that reaches for complex words and gets the grammar wrong in the process.

Practice all three Writing tasks with a detailed score breakdown — grammar, vocabulary, organization, and development.
