TOEFL® Writing Section: A Quick Guide to All Three Tasks
The Writing section is made up of three different tasks, each testing a different skill — sentence-level grammar, functional email writing, and short opinion writing. They're graded differently, but a few habits raise your score across all three.

Habits that help on all three
Don't rush past capitalization and punctuation. These are graded as part of "grammar and mechanics," and they're the easiest points to lose carelessly.
Development beats length for its own sake. A shorter response where every point is explained with reasoning scores better than a longer one that just lists ideas without developing them.
Plan for 20–30 seconds before you start typing. Knowing your 2–3 main points before you begin prevents the response from wandering or running out of ideas halfway through.
Proofread your last two sentences specifically. Most careless errors happen when you're rushing to finish — a 10-second check at the end catches them.
Clear, correct, well-organized writing with simpler vocabulary consistently scores higher than writing that reaches for complex words and gets the grammar wrong in the process.
